RealDVD Banned In The US

It is now official RealNetworks' DVD copying program RealDVD has been permanently banned in the United States and Real has been ordered to pay Hollywood 4.5 Million Dollars.

It is the never ending tale of whether you should be allowed to make a backup copy of your store bought DVD movies or not, Hollywood says no and RealNetworks' said yes.

The problem was that RealDVD violated the Content Scramble System (CSS) and when Real appealed the original court order to ban RealDVD they counter sued Hollywood claiming that they were indeed an illegal cartel.

Despite the loss many alternatives both paid and free remains for consumers to make backup copies, but will HollyWood stop here? I doubt it.
